Learning Making and Doing Gender Social Science Questions

Analyze the definition of “intersectionality”. Is it ever useful to focus on a singular category of analysis, such as sexuality, or race or gender, without an intersectional approach?  Why or why not?

Discuss the differences between “sex” and “gender.” What are the major traditional explanations for gender differences? How have feminist theorists critiqued these explanations?

  1. How does beauty culture impact women and men differently?  Give examples of expectations of beauty and their implications for women in real life (you can use your own examples here, rather than specifics from the text or lectures).
  2. In your opinion, is women’s studies a legitimate field of academic study?  Why or why not?
  3. How does patriarchy define the role of women in the contemporary United States and the world?  Provide at least three specific examples (from the text, lectures, or your own life) which demonstrate the role of patriarchy over women in the United States or elsewhere in the world.
